Navan RFC welcomed Emerald Warriors to Balreask Old on Thursday night, 26th Oct, in Round Four of the Leinster Women's Rugby League, Division 5.
A wet day gave greasy playing conditions, but Navan were looking forward to their first game under lights at home.
Emily-Jo White had a number of strong carriers during the game and she found herself over the white wash after 15 minutes. The forwards continued to work themselves around the pitch, with Kelly Brady getting herself on the score sheet next. Her front row colleague Sue T excelled at set piece, providing a solid execution at lineout time to get the team to set a platform. Sue was next on to the score sheet, with Leah Morris accurately slotting the conversion for the extra 2 points.
In advance of half time Emily Jo White got herself on the score sheet again after an accurate pass from Paula Keating from the base of the ruck. This was only possible through the hard work of the strong carries from Mairead Carty and Tara Quinn allowing quick ruck ball.
Emerald Warriors settled into the game in the second half and resulted in Navan having to defend for a substantial period of time. Navan were patient and organised themselves well, relentlessly working themselves to get into position early on defence.
Winger Aoife Hughes, on her second cap, broke down the right wing, after a strong scrum platform. The covering tackle was deemed to be high, resulting in a penalty try awarded to Navan. Allie Flynn found herself in space after good interplay between the backs and forwards, with Anna McGarry providing the crucial last pass. Leah Morris once again converted and added the two points.
In the last minutes of the game Emerald Warriors continued to pressure the Navan try line. A chip through was gathered by Aoife Hughes five metres from the line. Quick hands across the face of the posts by Leah Morris, Kelly Brady, Anna McGarry and Abbie Thornton released Niamh Lister down the left wing. Lister on her debut for Navan found herself accelerating down the wing, evading three defenders to dot down to the left of the post. Leah Morris was on hand to add the extras. Final Score; Navan 43 - 0 Emerald Warriors.
It was a very successful night for Navan with the home support finding their voice and providing extra motivation throughout the evening.
Navan are looking forward to a weekend off before heading into the next block of games.
