(Report by Graeme Morrison)
Navan Blue Dragons had a very busy day, with our regular training session at 10 am, followed by the short trip to Barnhall RFC for the first blitz of the season.
The training session was well attended and finished with a very exciting game of bulldog. The catchers kept an excellent defensive line with some great strategies for tagging, especially when catching the coaches!
The Barnhall blitz kicked off at 12 pm, and Navan found themselves in a group with Coffey GAA, Wicklow Warriors, Energia and Barnhall. The matches were all competitive and played in a great spirit with good rugby played by all teams. Coffey GAA deserves special mention as this was their first experience of a rugby blitz, and they adapted their GAA skills to rugby remarkably quickly.
Leinster Rugby provided great support for the blitz with players Hugo Keenan, Will Connors and Max Deegan all in attendance along with Leo the Lion. The lads were not content to just pose for selfies, they all honed their match sharpness for the coming season by taking part in some of the games.
The Blue Dragons faced the running talent of Hugo Keenan as he guested for Energia in the third match. Hugo was defended very well and he was kept from crossing for a try. Not every defence will contain Hugo so effectively this season.
In the final match against Barnhall, the Dragons squad was boosted by the presence of both Max Deegan and Will Connors. Once the lads adjusted to the Blue Dragons attacking rugby style they slotted in very well and were particularly impressed by Daniel's back door pass to set up a try.
Hugo, Max and Will were great ambassadors for Leinster, they really got into the spirit of the event and were very generous in making time for innumerable photo requests from all of the teams.
The experience of playing alongside and against these rugby stars is one that the Blue Dragons will remember forever. All at the Blue Dragons would like to express their enormous gratitude to our friends at Barnhall RFC for organising such a wonderful blitz, and providing the amazing opportunity to rub shoulders with international rugby players.
Next week the Blue Dragons will be having a joint training session with our friends from Virginia, who will be making the quick trip down the M3 to Navan to join our regular training session. This is the first time that we have held a joint session and hopefully this will be the first of many.
Navan Blue Dragons training runs on Sunday mornings from 10am - 11am during the rugby season (September to May) with players from 6 years to 18 years. If you would like more information on joining the Blue Dragons as a player, or would like to volunteer as a coach then please contact Graeme Morrison on 087-6142893.
