Navan played AB in a scintillating game of rugby on pitch one. AB started the stronger team. After an initial Navan dropkick to start a match AB retained possession they slowly moved through the pitch from the halfway line with repeated gains into tight before moving it wide about 10 m out from the Navan line and scoring into corner (unconverted).
Navan reacted well to the setback with a breakaway try scored in style with a subsequent conversion. Ashbourne Balbriggan countered this with more pressure and a try of their own (unconverted). With high cross-field wind Navan were awarded a scrum for a knock on just inside their own 22. After a clean strike at a competitive scrum The back line noticed they had numbers over on the open side. Strong running, holding the fenders and good passing allowed Navan to move 70 m up the pitch before converting this opportunity into a good try (unconverted). This try signaled the start of a Navan period of dominance that continued from midway into the first half through to midway into the second half.
The Navan performance was characterised by good play and a rock solid shape on the field with aggressive direct running from the pack and significant danger provided from the midfield.
By that stage Navan were in the lead 22 points to 10. The Navan team took the opportunity to deepen the squad experience by making a significant number of personnel and positional changes. AB took advantage of this to bring themselves right back into the game.
The game was paused with five minutes to go due to a significant knee injury to an AB player. The Navan captain Ellen V. took this opportunity to regroup the team and ask them to dig in deep to see the match out to get the W, which they did.
Final score: Navan 22 Ashbourne 20.
Congratulations to Derinn & Robyn on their debuts.
The entire match was played in good spirits by both teams who are credit to themselves their families and our clubs. The future is bright for an exciting season for Navan under 16 girls with a win in their opening game.
